Spaceships Rentals has officially landed in Perth, the capital of the mighty galaxy that is Western Australia. If WA has been on your radar, you’ll know it's big, but for those that don’t know, Western Australia is roughly one third of all of Australia’s landmass and is about the same size as countries like Kazakhstan or Argentina.

For some, Western Australia may seem like a place for hardcore road trippers. But that shouldn't stop a Space Traveller and thanks to Perth now being on the map as a Spaceships depot, you don’t need to be a hardcore explorer to give it a red-hot go.

Perth As Your Road Trip Launch Pad

Known as the ‘City of Light’ and the mining capital of Australia, Perth is up there with one of the country's most loved cities.

Pick up your Spaceship and start at Kings Park, one of the city's best free activities. Spanning over 400 hectares, Kings Park has more green space to explore than New York’s Central Park and offers the best views of the city over the Swan River. From there, it’s easy to check out surrounding areas like Elizabeth Quay or South Perth’s foreshore.

For classic charm and historic architecture, visit Fremantle, located just 30 minutes from the CBD. Wander the Cappuccino Strip on South Terrace for people watching and catch the Fremantle Markets if you're there over the weekend. Head towards the harbour in the evening to enjoy the buzz of the town with a craft beer in hand.

As the day comes to an end, chase the sunset west. Head to Cottesloe for an iconic, social vibe, Scarborough for an energetic atmosphere or City Beach for upscale dining and boardwalks. Sit down for dinner, or grab some fish and chips and head beachside to enjoy the sun dropping into the Indian Ocean. For those used to the East Coast of Australia, it’s a special sight to see the sun set over the ocean instead of rising over it.

Now that Perth has a Spaceships Rentals depot, prepare for takeoff and get ready to explore the best of Australia's west coast.

Perth As Your Road Trip Launch Pad

No matter how long you’ve got to spend in Perth, you’re guaranteed a good time. You can see an enormous amount of WA without worrying about risking your Remote Recovery Cover. All the epic destinations listed within this section sit in the standard travel area. Here are a few ways to fill your days in Western Australia, depending on what you’re after:

For wine and coastline: Head south towards Margaret River to find a range of cellar doors, artisan cheese and some of the best surf beaches in the country, all within a short drive of each other. Add in the Busselton Jetty, the caves around Yallingup and Augusta for an easy but adventurous few days on the road with a good mix of activities.

For unique landscapes: Western Australia is no stranger to the weird and wonderful, in a landscape so vast you never know what you may find. Head a couple hours north of Perth to visit the Pinnacles Desert. Here you’ll find thousands of limestone formations rising from the earth. Pair it with a stop in at Lancelin and go sandboarding on the rolling white sand dunes.

For wildlife: Rottnest Island is an obvious choice to see some of the most smiley creatures on earth, the quokka - very cute, but don’t touch, they’re curious creatures but aren’t as friendly as they look! While you’re there, grab some snorkelling gear and check out one of the island's many shipwrecks surrounded by reef and marine life. Further north, Ningaloo Reef is one of the only places on earth where you can swim alongside the amazing whale shark, or if you're not wanting to get too close, simply swim in turquoise waters and drift over corals just metres from the shore. Keen fisherman can also jump on a charter boat from Coral Bay or Exmouth and fish for giant trevally, marlin or tuna.

For rugged south coast scenery: If you're headed south, both Albany and Esperance are worth the adventure. Albany's Torndirrup National Park is home to dramatic granite formations called the Gap and Natural Bridge, which have been carved out by the Southern Ocean over time. Further east, Esperance's Lucky Bay is famous for its bright white sand that squeaks when you walk on it and crystal clear waters. It’s pretty awesome! There’s a great loop often called the Great Ocean Drive that’s around 40km long passing by beautiful beaches, rocky headlands, endless bays and the Pink Lake.

For waves, but not the ocean kind: A couple hours inland from Perth you’ll find Wave Rock, arguably one of Australia’s most recognised natural wonders. Located near Hyden, the 15-metre high rock formation shaped like a breaking wave is definitely a head turner. Nearby, also find the Hippo’s Yawn and Mulka’s Cave for more rock magic. While you’re in town, pop into the Wave Rock Wildlife Park to meet some resident roos, camels, wombats, native birds and many other exotic animals.

The Western Australia Explorer - Mission WA

Ready for the full taste of Western Australia? As a keen Space Traveller you could easily spend a few weeks to months out on the road exploring every corner of Australia’s largest state. Choose to loop back to Perth or take a one-way trip to one of our other 7 depot locations. The further you explore, the emptier and more spectacular it gets with red earth and blue skies painting every horizon. It’s about as close to Mars as you’ll get without a rocket budget. Here’s how to fill your days headed north on a Western Australia adventure…

Discover Western Australia’s gorges: Karijini National Park in particular is otherworldly. Visit to see a mix of red canyons, emerald pools and waterfalls. Further north, Danggu (Geikie Gorge) National Park near Fitzroy Crossing offers scenic walks beneath the limestone cliffs. You may even see a few freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the riverbanks from afar.

Immerse yourself in over 50,000 years of history: Around Karratha and Dampier, the Murujuga rock art is one of the biggest collections of petroglyphs (images carved into rock surfaces) in the world and is World Heritage listed. Explore the rocky hills and learn about the carvings made by the Ngarda-Ngarli, the Aboriginal traditional owners of the area. Though it’s growing in popularity, Murujuga National Park receives fewer visitors than other major urban parks, so you’ll be able to take it all in without the crowds.

See Bungle Bungle Range from above: The world famous striped beehive domes of Purnululu are best reached and seen, by air. Scenic flights from Kununurra will get you there in about an hour or so with views of the entire orange and black rippled landscape laid out below you.

Discover the best of the Kimberly Region: Visit Kununurra to see where Kimberly gets lush. Lake Argyle (about 70km away via the Victoria Highway) at sunset is something straight out of a movie and there’s even an infinity pool with views over the lake to enjoy it from. Mirima National Park, sometimes called the “mini Bungles”, offers sweeping views of the Ord River Valley with epic lookouts and walking trails throughout. End your day at the Hoochery Distillery and you’ve got your afternoon sorted.

Wander to the wild end of the road: Wyndham’s Five Rivers Lookout has awesome views over the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack and Pentecost Rivers all pouring into the Cambridge Gulf. Nearby, the giant crocodile statue is exactly as cheesy as you’d hope, which is a good enough reason to stop!

Spaceships tip: The dry season (roughly May to October) is prime time in the north with clear skies, comfortable temperatures (ranging from 20°C to 34°C) and safer driving conditions. The wet season is bound to bring flooding and road closures.

Don't Forget - Remote Recovery Cover

All over Western Australia, towns are a long way apart and if a vehicle breaks down or has an accident, getting help can mean big wait times due to distance and sometimes the need for specialist recovery. That’s why Remote Recovery Cover exists. It covers the reasonable cost of towing and recovering in the red shaded areas of the map.

It’s important to remember that Stress-Free Insurance does not cover remote recovery, the two work side by side. If any part of your trip enters the red zone, you’ll need to add remote recovery to your booking before your rental starts. It can't be added mid-trip.

The last thing to keep in mind wherever you're headed in that Spaceships campervans are permitted to travel on sealed roads only. Gravel, dirt and unsealed tracks are off limits so if a bucket list stop requires 4WD access, you'll need to find another way in like scenic flights or a guided tour.
