They say that “Less is More.” In the case of an Aussie road trip, we think that’s true when it comes to driving. It may seem strange for a road trip blog to suggest driving less, but the less time you spend driving, the more time you have to enjoy the amazing destinations, experiences and adventures on your campervan hire in Australia. And that’s what it’s all about.
A road trip is not about spending all day behind the steering wheel. It’s a journey of discovery, seeing new places and having unforgettable adventures. Your Spaceships campervan is your transport and accommodation on your road trip, and is literally your “portal” to an amazing out-of-this-world experience.
Australia is a huge country and the key to making the most of your road trip is planning. Of course, you can simply climb aboard your Spaceships campervan and see where the road takes you. That’s fine, but you may be able to get more from your time in Australia.
Australia is roughly the same size as the US and about one and a half times bigger than Europe. Also, because of its relatively low population, (27.2 million people compared to over 340 million in the US) there are fewer towns and settlements and a lot of long, open roads. That’s a good thing, but can also be a bad thing. You could find yourself driving hundreds of kilometres between your chosen destinations.

It’s easy to be too ambitious. You’re flying into Sydney, but would love to see Uluru. It looks like the coast into the middle of the country on the map, but it’s a mahoosive 29 hour/2850km drive! The nearest town, (a town called) Alice Springs, (as the song nearly says), is still a mighty 450km drive from Uluru.
If you have 7 days for your return road trip, you’re going to drive on average 815kms a day. That’s probably more than 10 hours driving each day. OK, that’s an extreme example of a “bad trip”, but you get the point.
Take your time when planning to visit Uluru
And it’s not just the kilometres. Particularly in summer, it’s going to be hot (Yaay!), but that also means you need to keep hydrated with plenty of water, and your favourite road trip snacks. But you could drive for miles before you see a town or even services, so planning your water, food and of course, fuel is essential.
But fear not, intrepid Space Traveller. Our team of hardened road trippers are here to help. We’ve done the hard yakka for you. (That’s Aussie for “leg work”). We’ve had the stiff back, the numb bum, the sun burnt face and quite literally, experienced the thirst for the next stop.
Our travel blog is packed with road trip inspiration and of course your Spaceships Aussie campervan is designed to give you maximum flexibility to cram in as many destinations and experiences into your adventure as possible, but in a responsible way: less driving is more time for adventure.
With unlimited kms and no extra fee for one way hires, you can pick up at one depot, enjoy an unforgettable road trip, then drop off in another part of our great country. Travel up the east coast between cosmopolitan Sydney and Brisbane. Or down the east coast from tropical Cairns to Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. Take in the Great Ocean Road on a spectacular Adelaide to Melbourne road trip, or pick up in Melbourne and take the ferry over to Tassie, leaving your campervan at our Hobart depot. There are heaps of options: and they’re all doable without spending all your time driving.
We have downloaded heaps of road trip into, campervan tips & more from the brains of our amazing crew - no crew members were harmed in the process, no worries - and have uploaded it into our Support Station. Using that unique online support system is like having a Spaceships Crew Member in the co-pilot's seat when exploring Australia by Spaceship. A virtual Spaceships Crew Member that is as we have to stay in our Spaceships depot stations to make sure all processes and systems are working in optima forma. We'll leave the roadtripping & exploring to you.
But if you do want to talk to a human customer support crew member, we're only an email, phone call or chat message away. Check out the contact options and how to link up. On top of that, we’ve curated a whole host of activities all over Australia, so you can choose and book extra activities for your trip all in one place – and that’s right here!
We recommend driving no more than around 5-6 hours a day (400-500kms) max, with plenty of stops to take a break and see the sights. Use our blogs and apps like Google Maps or Organic Maps (no internet connection required) to help plan your route and where to stop along the way.
Plan to drive less and see and do more. Choose your campervan, plan your route and prepare for take-off on your own unique and unforgettable adventure in Australia!
